If you or a loved one suffers from common allergy symptoms or even has asthma, you know that there are many triggers found in your home. However, you no longer have to be victimized by allergies. With a few simple home improvement projects, you can be on your way to reducing allergies and living a healthier life.

Having wall to wall carpeting is the number one allergy trigger found in people. This brings about the question, why? Carpets are the culprit when it comes to attracting allergens such as mold spores, pet dander, dust mites and other things that you may not have even thought of. Vacuuming and washing carpet fibers is not enough because oftentimes these allergens are sitting deep enough not to be washed out. The best way to deal with this is to remove the carpeting and install hardwood floors instead. Hardwood flooring costs about the same as carpeting and reduces allergy triggers, as well as providing an easier surface from which to clean spills and messes.

Heavy drapes may be appealing to the average home owner, but they in fact are the perfect storage place for dust mites that trigger allergies. Washing drapes is not enough and even if thoroughly cleaned, not all dust mites will be eliminated. The best way to deal with this problem is to remove heavy drapes and install stylish blinds instead. Blinds made from bamboo and wood add a lovely feel to any home and can be easily vacuumed and wiped clean.

Most bathrooms unfortunately suffer from the same problem- the lack of a vent. Not having vents installed creates a thriving environment for mold and mildew to grow. Mold easily grows in dark, damp, humid places as well as areas with low air circulation. This describes most bathrooms, may they be new or old. You can easily eliminate this problem by installing a vent. If you don’t have the money to install one or the expertise to do so, consider purchasing a dehumidifier that is also as efficient, but much more cost effective.

Everyone is familiar with mold in one form or another, and almost all households have experienced mold growth in some way. This can create an unhealthy environment and trigger allergies even in those who are not usually so sensitive. The best way to deal with mold growth is to eliminate it properly when it happens by hiring a professional and taking preventative measures. Mold thrives in dark and damp environments. This describes basements, garages, bathrooms and kitchens. Treat these areas with mold killing paint, add ventilation and seal off any leaking areas, especially in the basement.

Your pillows, comforters, bed linens and box spring mattresses attract dust mites that thrive off of shed scales from the human skin. Most everyone’s allergies are easily triggered by these microscopic culprits, so it is time that you took a stand. Wash your bed linens, comforters and pillows often in hot water as cold water won’t kill the allergens. Your box spring mattresses should be covered with an airtight cover to ensure that there are no allergens coming in or going out.

Give allergies a fight by eliminating the many ways allergens can hang around in your home. Use what you have learned within this article to create a healthier living environment without having to sacrifice your wallet. Most tips are common sense and easily carried out without much trouble.

Mold Testing to See if Your Home Has Black Mold

A mold test kit will allow you to test your home to see if you have any toxic mold present. Since many molds are non-toxic and therefore not dangerous to humans, it is important to be able to test for mold and find out if it is black mold. The test kits on the market today let you do this yourself without the costly job of calling in mold remediation professionals to do it for you. The test kits for mold are easy to use and use the same procedure as the professionals do. With a mold test kit, you can really give your home a really good inspection.

If you notice that there is mold growing in the basement or on a surface somewhere else in the home, you can just scrape off a small portion of it into a mold test kit. You do need to wear rubber gloves and a face mask, because if it is black mold, it could be very toxic.

You can use a paint scraper to get the mold sample for the black mold test kit, but make sure that you disinfect it beforehand to make sure you won’t contaminate the specimen. Then all you have to do is close the cover on the mold test kit, print your name and address and the time and date you took the sample. You can bring the test kit to a lab to have the mold analyzed.

Black mold test kits are not expensive to buy. You can easily pick up a mold test kit for about $15 and it only costs another $30 to the mold sample analyzed in a lab to see if it is toxic black mold. When you look at these prices, compared to what you would have to pay professional technicians to do the job, it is quite easy to be able to do the tests yourself.

The hardest part of mold tests is trying to find out whether or not you do have mold in your home. When you can’t see or smell it, it is really hard to know where to look. Fortunately, there are mold test kits for this as well. This type of mold test kit comes with a petri dish containing a disk. All you have to do is set the dish in an area where you think there may be mold and leave it there for about two hours. Then you close up the kit and let the disc incubate for 48 hours. When you reopen the mold test kit, if you notice there is a fungus growing on the disc, then you need to have it analyzed to see if it is black mold.

What to Do If You Find Mold While Remodeling Your Bathroom

Each year, thousands of homeowners make the decision to have their bathrooms remodeled. Many of those homeowners enjoy doing their remodeling, but there are others who feel as if they opened up a can of worms. Those homeowners are likely the unlucky bunch who found mold in their bathroom. If you were remodeling your bathroom and you find mold, do you know what to do? Unfortunately, a large number of individuals would not.

Before you familiarize yourself with what you should do if you find mold in your bathroom, it is important to examine what mold is. Mold is scientifically described as being a microscopic fungus. This fungus not only looks unattractive, but it can be dangerous. While some types of mold are considered relatively harmless, there are other types of mold that are considered toxic.

Unfortunately, due to the moisture that can be found inside most bathrooms, black, toxic mold can be found in thousands of bathrooms in the United States. If you start to remodel your bathroom and you find mold under your toilet or even under you floor tiles, there is a good chance that you may have black mold on your hands.

As previously mentioned, black mold is often defined as being a toxic mold. This is because it is one of the most dangerous types of all molds. In addition to having respiratory problems, you may develop headaches, skin rashes, fevers, and other flu-like symptoms. Although your first impulse may be to remove the mold yourself, you may want to rethink your decision to do so. When mold is improperly removed, mold spores can spread throughout the rest of your home. That is why it may be good to call upon a professional. That professional will likely be a mold removal specialist or an air quality control specialist.

Although it can be quite expensive to have your mold tested and removed, you will want to do so. If your mold is not taken care of, professionally, it can begin to spread and even move into other parts of your home. Once you have had all of your mold removed from your bathroom, no matter what type of mold it is, you will want to take steps to prevent another mold outbreak from occurring in the future. You can easily do this by incorporating a few extra projects into your bathroom remodeling plan. It may be a good idea to make sure that your bathroom has a fan installed in it.

If you do not already have a bathroom fan installed in your bathroom, you will want to get one right away. It has been noted that working bathroom fans help to eliminate the moisture that mold, particularly black mold, thrives off of. No matter what type of bathroom fan you would like to purchase, whether it be a traditional bathroom fan or a decorative one, you should be able to find whatever you are looking for online or at one of your local home improvement stores.

Regardless of where you purchase a bathroom fan from, you are advised to purchase one, even if you don’t already have a mold problem. Bathroom remodeling projects, even relatively small projects, can get quite costly. For that reasons, you will want to make sure that you do everything to protect your newly remodeled bathroom from being attacked by mold.
